GOOD ORAL HEALTH CAN HELP PREVENT ORAL CANCER
"By maintaining good oral hygiene and good oral health, one can prevent HPV infection and subsequent HPV-related cancers."
Thanh Cong Bui, postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, was quoted saying in response to a study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.
This study showed a relationship of poor oral health and HPV infection. The participants who reported bad oral health had a 56% higher risk of developing oral HPV infection compared to those who had good oral health. HPV infection is a primary cause of throat cancer. Therefore, one can decrease their risk of oral cancer, by maintaining good oral hygiene and oral health. Awareness and early diagnosis is another important step in identifying and treating oral cancer.
